Installing Ruby on Rails on Windows 7 - Quick and Easy

Since I had so many problems installing RoR on my laptop with Windows 7, I thought I would share my steps with you. Many people tell you to use InstantRails. I did this too, but the option below worked better for me.

• Download and install Ruby 1.8.7 http://rubyforge.org/frs/download.php/71492/rubyinstaller-1.8.7-p299.exe

• Download the latest RubyGems and extract the file somewhere http://rubyforge.org/frs/?group_id=126

• Using the console (type cmd in your search to open it) cd into the directory into which you split RubyGems, and type: " ruby setup.rb " (without quotes).

It takes a minute, and then, if all goes well, you will see many lines of text.

4. Then in your console type: " gem install rails " (without quotes)

5. Then in your console type: " gem install sqlite3-ruby " (without quotes)

It takes a minute, and then, if all goes well, you will see many lines of text. This is an update to your database, which is sqlite3.

Then you should have a good setup and be prepared to ride on rails!

There are many tutorials, but I bought this book: Agile Web Development with Rails (3) -

I first bought Simply Rails 2 and even chatted a bit with the author. Simply Rails 2 was a good option if I stayed with InstantRails. He really explains everything well if you are a designer (like me), and take more time to understand the coding side of programming.

Are there any steps after this that you would like to share? This is useful?

InstantRails 2.0 since 2007 and thus is very outdated. It is still strange how many users continue to do this.

I always recommend the following:

• use the latest version of Rubyinstaller.org (now it is 1.8.7p302)

• There is no need to install the rubygems package separately, it is included in the rubyinstaller (as well as the one you used). You can just run the executable, and the ruby -v and gem -v commands should work. You might want to make gem update --system safe.

• also install devkit ! it allows you to set stones that should compile binary code (for example, thin).

• Set a common set of window stones for your enjoyment. I have a batch file written in this post .

• install git

• install the editor of your choice (Netbeans, which is free, or use Rubymine, which is awesome!)

I helped at the RailsGirls meeting, and there we launched the girls using the RailsInstaller (and this is available for Windows and Mac OSX). Although I personally prefer to do it manually, this is a great alternative to get you started.
