You might want to talk to the owners of Icarus Verilog or Verilator. There are many other tools for fresh meat that come with EDA and open source.

I dig this old topic, but we from the KICAD EDA project were still looking for new developers and testers. KiCad is a GPL kit for drawing circuits, printed circuit boards and viewing gerberas. It is written in C ++ using the wxWidgets toolkit and can work on the basis of Windows, Linux / BSD and Mac OSX.

Learn more about the project at: http://www.kicad-eda.org

And the project is now placed on the launch bar.

We made extensive use of Electric during our VLSI and Microelectronics classes. The project is sponsored by Sun and may soon become an orphan in the days of Oracle. It will be useful to contact them and provide assistance. This is a great tool worthy of support.
