View an open source project for parallelization

For the assignment, I need to parallelize the project and the document about my work and results. So Im looking for the perfect open source C # or Java project that will take about 60 hours to work (so reasonably small - sorry for the generalization, not sure how to transfer it into perspective, considering I'm still learning) and quite intense processor, Viewed the Source of the forge, and nothing struck me. With the exception of downloading and compiling 10 or so projects and running them through the profiler, can anyone make a suggestion on how I can find it? Or even if you know about it? Thanks.

If you are looking for a Java project, I suggest Map-Reduce and Hadoop as the basis for the selection. I work in image processing, and the problems there are trivially parallel, as Brian noted. Another area is in array-based simulations, for example. n-body. A quick check gives me this GPL'ed Java Source - it looks pretty small. Good luck with your project.

You may try to find an image processing library or application. Several filters / conversions can be parallelized without too much fuss.

I donโ€™t know any projects on my own, but your post made me think about programs that perform lengthy calculations, such as Seti @Home, and that I canโ€™t remember what name the human genome encodes.

Perhaps something like that.
