How can I create a “grid” where everyone knows their neighbor?

Hey guys, I was wondering what is the easiest way to create a layout grid in Javascript / jQuery that will allow each "node" to talk to its closest neighbors (up, down, left and right).

Does anyone have an idea ?! :)
