How to use Lucene to get tags for tagcloud?

Question

I am new to Lucene, and I have a job where I can create an index from a column of a database table that stores tags, and look for that index for a specific tag and display the results and their ratings. I see this as an alternative to the MySQL full-text index, which I heard mixed comments about.

But I want to get from the most popular tags in the index along with their counts, and then use this data to create tagcloud.

Does anyone know if and how Lucene can be requested to get the most popular tags in the index and their score in general?
