Is SSI relevant?

In my work, I can see old sites using SSI to include huge pieces of code and do some conditional work. I'm just wondering, is SSI still developing? If not, what modern simple server-side scripting languages exist?

SSI still has its niche. It is fast and easy and widely supported. There may not be an active development of SSI, as it is ideal for ages.

SSI has (and always had) a very limited set of functions that should never have been competitive with real scripting languages. Thus, the technology is lively and good. Not much to develop ...

Regarding server-side scripting languages: suppose you mean the embedded languages on the web server? I know nothing but SSI here (and, if you want to count this, the regular expression URL manipulation capabilities offered by Apache mod_rewrite ). This is an area of "real" languages and development platforms.
