Is it possible to remove ruby jewels, rails, etc. And do a complete clean install?

I seem to have problems with gems, and I want to start with a new installation. Is this possible without reinstalling Snow Leopard from scratch?

The easiest solution is to check rvm . This allows you to have multiple Ruby environments (each with its own set of gems) installed in parallel, making it easy to “start fresh” and create an environment from scratch.

If you really want to uninstall before using RVM (this is a really recommended solution), flag this blog post with Chad Wally .

Yes. You can forget all about the gems in your Ruby system and install RVM. This guide , complete with screenshots, will show you how to do this. Then you can use gemsets to keep things organized, and if you want, remove all your gems anytime and get started.
