Struts vs. [j] Ruby on Rails

I spent the last 9 months exclusively with Ruby on Rails.

I was asked to join the project and they are currently using Struts with Tomcat. I have already done Java in the past and vowed never to return for several reasons. They are currently having trouble finding people who know Java or are ready to join a project that uses it. (This is without payment, but has potential)

I just do not think that in the end I could endure Struts, and if they need what Java as a platform offers both security and scalability, then they can switch to jRuby later.

I'd love to hear what you guys think.

I do not agree that Java (JRuby) offers protection or scaling per se. Performance is very close to C-based interpreters. You get the opportunity to use Java classes in your application. If a project needs to use a specific Java library, or if the deployment stack should be Java, I definitely recommend JRuby (on Rails). Otherwise, expect similar results in the jRuby on Rails application like any other Ruby on Rails application.

Rails or Ruby is great for small school projects, look at Rail3, it still has the same staff as Struts2. Now the main thing is how you work with JavaScript, not the server side, and you lose all the simplicity of rails. "
