IIS6 with IE8 not loading ASP.NET MVC site properly

This is strange, and I hope I explain it correctly.

When I debug locally with VS2008, IE8 looks like FF and Chrome (minus the obvious). It works well and I'm happy.

When I use IE8 with our IIS6 (Win2003) or Cassini box, the buttons do not align, JavaScript errors and some other CSS anomalies occur: the table cells skip the colored borders, div elements have different sizes by 2-3 pixels.

If anyone has met this, please let me know - it completely puzzles me

IE8 works in different modes depending on whether it visits a site running on localhost and another server. This is strange, I know. I also ran into this problem. Use the developer tools (F12) and check in which mode (Quirks, IE7 Standard, IE8 Standard, IE8 compatibility) the browser works.

Could this be an old CSS file that is cached on the client?
