How does Google Painting in the desert work?

I just watched the video at Wilderness Downtown - http://www.thewildernessdowntown.com/ - and I couldn’t understand how the people behind it, the Google Map that scrolls and rotates, are all on HTML5 canvas.

I looked at the Google Maps Javascript API - http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/ - and nowhere in it I see any pointers on how to embed a Google map in the canvas tag (which can then be converted as in a video).

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
