Is there a performance difference between movieclip and graphic character?

I was wondering if there is a difference in performance / memory usage between the movie clip character and the graphic character?

Yes there is.

In this regard, Shape will be the easiest DisplayObject available since you cannot instantiate the DisplayObject class.

If you need additional functionality, such as registering mouse events or adding children, you can go to Sprite, and finally, if you work with Flash CS and need a timeline, select MovieClip.

Another view is that a Movie clip only takes up one frame on the main timeline to work. whereas a graphic symbol will need as many frames on the main timeline as inside. This is due to the fact that graphic symbols have a separate timeline. Clips have their own timeline.

Moreover. you cannot add interactivity and sounds, etc. to graphic characters. while in a video clip you can add them and a bunch of other functions too.
