How to get a text box to place two columns of a table

Question

So, I am studying some php and found that my html skills are more than a little rusty. I am trying to have my textarea span two columns of a table. W3schools says that I can do colspan for the <th> , but did not see if it was supported for <td> . I was thinking of splitting it between two tables of the same form. There seems to be an easier way to do this. I tried td colspan "2" but did nothing

<td colspan="2">...</td> absolutely correct.

 <table border="1"> <tr> <td>Column 1</td> <td>Column 2</td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2"><textarea style="width: 100%;" /></td> </tr> </table>

You can definitely do

 <td colspan="2">

You should be able to use:

 <table> <tr> <td colspan="2"><textarea /></td> </tr> <tr> <td></td> <td></td> </table> 

EDIT: I don't think you can do this in CSS.

You need to use CSS so that the text area occupies the entire width selected by the td tag, for example:

 <tr><td colspan="2"><textarea style="width: 100%;" /></td> </tr>
