Jboss application server newbie question

I am starting to learn JBoss.
I went to the download page http://www.jboss.org/jbossas/downloads.html , but I don’t understand what the official version is, i.e. GA.
There is 7.0.0.Alpha1 6.0.0.CR1 6.0.0.M5 6.0.0.M4 , etc.
I'm not sure what each version is about (What does M * or CR1 mean?)
Can someone help me? Which version to download?

thanks

M stands for a milestone - an important step that is achieved in the project. CR - candidate release . This means that it has not yet been fully verified (not yet GA ). Read more here .

In my opinion, you should download the latest release.

Looking at the timestamp of your post, on December 5th, you asked right before the release of JBoss Application Server 6.0.0 on the 28th. During this time, the AS6 range has advanced compared to 6.1.0. The final release cycle, while AS7 conducted a fast development cycle.

At the time of publication, you can download JBoss Application Server 7.0.2.Final , as well as 7.1.0.Beta1b, depending on how close you would like to be to the cutting edge. To understand version codes and some of the software life cycles :

  • Final = polished, tested and approved version
  • GA = general availability, final release, preparing for the big time
  • CR = GA Candidate Release Final Test and QE
  • M = release release, skating features and bug fixes in the assembly
  • ER = release of technical documentation, usually an assembly for a development team.

They will all differ from organization to organization, since the profiles for which each Milestone release is presented depend on the taste of project management. As an example, consider the Meego Wiki page to explain their releases of Milestone.

The latest "official version" is 5.1.0.

If you are learning JBoss, you might be better off with 6.0.0 CR1. As a candidate for release, it may not be as stable as the official version 6.0.0, but you will learn about the next version, not the latest.
