SQL: saving commands

Now I have a requirement that a column be added to a table containing a unique identifier (guid). This identifier is used to match records in different tables and databases, but there will be no FK restrictions. Would it be better to store guid as varchar (32) or as a unique type identifier?

Joins will be performed in this column, but not on a regular basis. This identifier is not a PC. I ask a question in terms of storage and performance.

If it is a GUID, save it as a uniqueidentifier
