From Wikipedia article :

There are several theories about what the initials "GW" mean. Greg Whitten, an early Microsoft employee who developed standards at BASIC, a compiler, says Bill Gates chose the name GW-BASIC. Whitten refers to her as the Gee-Whiz BASIC and is not sure what Gates called after him. The Microsoft User Guide from Microsoft Press also refers to this by this name. Perhaps it was also nicknamed Gee-Vis because he had a large number of graphic commands. Other common theories regarding the origins of the initials include Graphics and Windows, Gates, William (Microsoft President at the time), or Gates-Witten (two main program designers).
