What is the counterpart of the Windows service on Mac OSX

Question

On Windows, we call something that runs in the background as a service. What about Max OSX, is there such a thing? what is called?

I would say that the closest analogue is the launchd service.
Launchd is Apple's replacement for init and cron , among others.
