How to change colors for the ":" area in VIM?

VIM supports: the sign command, which is widely used in debuggers to display graphical breakpoints on the left. How can I find the correct names for the background and foreground colors of this area to change them?

I believe that you are looking for a SignColumn allocation SignColumn . For future reference, I found this by running :help highlight , then running the fragment found there that displays all the active highlight groups (inserted here for convenience).

 :so $VIMRUNTIME/syntax/hitest.vim

Color schemes, as far as I know, should be saved in

  <home>/.vim/colors

folder. Try some schemes here.
