How does advertising work on mobile phones?

After a lot of research on how mobile apps and games work, I noticed one thing that was talked about a lot, especially in Android development, and this is the integration of ads. I was a little confused about how ads work and how it benefits the developer. I decided to ask my friend to use his phone and play Angry Birds, launched the task killer app and played another game that was free. I noticed that in the application the announcement was at the bottom of the screen away from any real obstacles to using the program, but in the game it was broadcast on the far left or in the case of Angry Birds, it was in the upper right corner. Nothing seemed to get in the way when the add appears.

My question is to better understand how the way income and development works. How does an ad generate revenue for a developer based on how many users click on it? I have control over the ad and its size and where is it located? In the case of angry birds, this did not seem to be bad. So, in addition to being too verbose, above, how much control is the developer if they want to integrate advertising into their game or application?
