To encrypt php or to "call home"

I have a simple php script and you want to protect it.

I rule out ioncube, as they hack it anyway, and that will increase my customer support.

I heard about making a script call home. "Is this an alternative or is it the same as ion cube and similar software encryption?

If this is a viable alternative, are there any software or scripts that I can buy or learn how to code to use this technique?

if calling at home is not the best answer, which is the best alternative for securing php scripts.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

If this PHP code is distributed, what does it take to prevent someone from deleting the home call code?

Protect your code with legitimate means.

You may try to confuse the script, but the real fix for this problem is with the contract (i.e. the legal remedy suggested by alex).

Let the buyer of your script sign (or otherwise legally accept) an agreement / contract / license that states what you want them to do with your script. If you do not trust them to follow the agreement, do not give them a copy of your source.

Otherwise, you are practically trying to invent a DRM system that by definition does not exist. (For example: Playing MP3 songs without revealing the file path )
