Provide Add to Calendar link

I am trying to add the Add to Calendar link to my web application. I looked at a bunch of questions over the past couple of years, and now I'm more confused than ever.

There are iCal, vCal, vCalendar, iCalendar 1.0, iCalendar 2.0, etc. ..... I can’t even tell if some of them belong to the same thing.

What is the current Add to Calendar link submission method? I would prefer it to work, at least with Outlook, Android, no matter what calendar app comes with the Mac. And I already know that the iPhone does not have such functionality, period.

Added a bonus if you provided a link to the .NET library (with source code) that already does this.

Thanks.

RFC 5545 (AKA iCal, iCalendar) is likely to be the best choice for the most consistent email client support.

I have not used it myself, but DDay.iCal looks like a well-considered .Net implementation.

This blog shows how to use it in ASP.Net.
