Dictionary API in OS X?

I tried to find this in the developer documentation, but had problems hoping that someone could answer it or point me in the right direction.

In OS X applications using (I think) Core Text, you can hang over the word and type ctrl + cmd + d (or in the left triple finger as gestures) to find the dictionary definition via popover.

Is there an open API to add more information to this popover?

The Dictionary Services Guide for Apples offers HIDictionaryWindowShow(_:_:_:_:_:_:_:) . This function opens a window containing the definition of your phrase.
