I'm also interested in the difference, and what is confusing on the network. Here Jesse McConnell ( https://stackoverflow.com/users/1185262/jesse-mcconnell ) answers my question, which was published on the [jetty-users] mailing list ( http://jetty.4.n6.nabble.com /jetty-users-jetty-versions-tt3675449.html ):
yes, hightide is simply a distribution of berths with some additions that we cannot distribute from eclipses to their IP restrictions.
I dug a lot before I got this answer, so I will give the results below for reference. Hope this helps.
Description on eclipse.org . The Jetty Hightide application server is a distribution of a berth web server built in a codehouse, with additional services such as JNDI, XA, and JDBC pre-configured. For berth-6, this is an optimized, corrected reconstruction of berth-6, while for berth-7 it is a distribution based on standard berth-7 artifacts in combination with other third-party integrations. - http://www.eclipse.org/jetty/about.php
Description from docs.codehaus.org . Hightide is an optimized, versioned distribution of the Jetty open source web container. It comes pre-integrated with a number of services that are usually found only on J2EE application servers, or which you would otherwise have to combine on your own: JNDI, XA transaction service, JMS messaging fabric, and an accessible JDBC database. With its lightweight Jetty plug-in architecture, Hightide makes it easy for you to choose which of these services you want to use, or even replace them with others. - http://docs.codehaus.org/display/JETTY/Hightide+Documentation
Frequently Asked Questions: "What is the difference between Jetty from Mort Bay, Codehaus and / or Eclipse?" at wiki.eclipse.org . The latest kernel releases of jetty-7 and later are available in Eclipse, which use org.eclipse.jetty packaging. For versions 6 of Jetty, as well as some components of Jetty-7, such as RPM, Debs, Hightide, use codehaus, which uses org.mortbay packaging. - http://wiki.eclipse.org/Jetty/FAQ
However, the contents of the two distributions (see "Downloads" below) use oej packaging, so I don't think the answer is completely correct.
Mention of the features of http://wiki.eclipse.org/Jetty :
- Hightide Jetty Spread contains an example webapp that uses JAAS. - http://wiki.eclipse.org/Jetty/Feature/JAAS
- Jetty supports java: search for comp / env in web applications. This is an optional feature and you need to make some adjustments. However, if you are using the Jetty mailing list for Hightide, this feature is already fully enabled, so you can skip any configuration steps and just read the sections on how to put objects in Jetty JNDI so that you can load them at runtime. - http://wiki.eclipse.org/Jetty/Feature/JNDI
- Annotation processing is not enabled by default by the standard berth distribution, only by the Hightide distribution. - http://wiki.eclipse.org/Jetty/Feature/Annotations

After a quick glance, the contents look very similar.
