Android update update notification for android apk

Users have an Android app installed from a non-market installation (apk install instruction)

We also updated the application on the market.

Will the Android market send a notification to a user saying “new version is available” on phones where the application is installed manually?

The answer is NO. Applications that are not installed with the Android Market will not receive notification of updates on the Android Market. You must implement your own update notification mechanism in your application.

If a user opens a market and searches for an application that he shows as an update, market checks if the version installed on the device is the same as on the market. I am not sure about the behavior of automatic notification, I think it is, but I saw this behavior at random, sometimes it appears after an hour, sometimes a day.
