Is there still a free CDDB database?

I am creating a program that should interact with the cd database. Googling showed me projects like freedb or gnudb, but it seems like they have been dead for a long time (the last activity on the freedb forum was 2007, before it was filled with spam). Freedb still works, but is not supported and returns erratic results. Does anyone know of an active CDDB project that is freely available?

Although there is no strict CDDB service I can find, MusicBrainz offers a web service that can do the same and much more. It also emulates CDDB, additional information about the link provided by Brad.
