DTD equivalent for microformats?

Is there any standard for determining the structure of microformats?

(I’m thinking of writing a microformat editing tool in the WYSIWYG editor using forms created on the go — so an abstract grammar is needed to describe the individual migraformat).

I saw this article about MDN , which seems to describe what I'm looking for, but are there any definitions available in this format for the usual microformats used?

TIA

The short answer is no.

Long answer: the most common microformats have XMDP profiles , but they are read-only using software on "this text says that it means" level, not level "it means that." For more complete machine readability, you probably want GRDDL profiles that map microformats directly to RDF. Fewer microformats have those and those that exist are years, so don't cover newer changes in microformats.

Microformats are developed by the community, so there is no strict standardization. Existing microformats were mainly created at microformats.org , where you can find technical specifications. Some others ( unAPI or COinS for example) were developed elsewhere.

As a node side, I recommend considering Microdata and RDFa because of their growing popularity.
