Can I create an Outlook 2003 COM add-in written in VB6 to work with Outlook 2010?

I inherited an Outlook 2003 COM add-in written using VB6 (note: NOT VB.NET).

I need to update this to work with Outlook 2010. Is it possible to create an add-in for Outlook 2010 using VB6, or do I still need to re-deploy?

2003 COM Addins will work mainly in Outlook 2010. Some relevant details:

  • Almost all old COM events will still work like a charm, however

  • Interface changes will no longer work properly. The Outlook 2010 ribbon interface either ignores them or places them in a separate Add tab.

  • Your 2003 COM COM code will simply not work in 64-bit Outlook. Not that many people have used Office 64bits, but still.

I have not tested this explicitly, but Outlook 2010 still uses the COM add-on model, so adding VB6 should be all right. You may need to make a few changes to change the version as usual, but you do not need to rewrite it.
