1and1, Heroku hosting - how to set up email?

I just bought a domain name from 1and1 and set cname to point to my heroku application. However, I want to receive an email support@mydomain.com. Do I need to do this through 1and1 or heroku, and how do I do this?

This is a superuser question.

The answer to nutshells is that if you own a domain, you can run mail wherever you want - just set the DNS MX record to point to any server for which you want to process mail. In general, you do not want to run mail, because it is a huge headache, and there are responsibilities in it that you probably do not want to have (as evidenced by your request about this in Stack Overflow, and not about superuser or server failure) So you have two options:

  • Start mail yourself
  • Let someone else start mail for you.

I do not recommend # 1, but if you want, I think you're more lucky with him at 1 and 1. I have a friend who managed mail on his VPS for 1 and 1 for about four years before switching providers. Therefore, if you want to do this, read Postfix and set it to 1 and 1, install MX to point to this server.

It does not seem to me that you can run mail on Heroku, but I am far from an expert on this.

Option # 2, which I recommend, should let someone else handle this. For example, Google Apps will do this, and if you are a nonprofit, you can get it for free. This is free Gmail, which I consider an update from mail that I can provide myself. I also came across this SendGrid service, which appears to be detailed (albeit long) instructions for integrating with the Rails application on Heroku.
