Vim: change the appearance of line numbers (in addition to standard options)

I am trying to figure out how far I can improve the tuning of my Vim GUI. I am using MacVim 7.3, and what I would like to do is change the alignment, text alignment and border color of line numbers.

I know that the highlight command has certain standard configuration options, in particular the gui group, but what if I want something beyond what was suggested there? For example, the right border, not the underline. Is it possible?

It may be that it’s just not worth the trouble, but I would like to at least know what the initial steps will be so that I can call. (Even if it's simple: help add-borders-to-line-numbers, and I happened to miss it).

Thanks.

No, if you do not intend to enter the vim source and hack it from there, changing the appearance of the numbers, in addition to the fact that highlighting offers are impossible.

However, I remember a few patches that concerned something similar, so you can check the archives. You still have to recompile vim by doing this (if you manage to find a patch that does this).
