Custom Reference Types

Question

You could always add links for your project in Visual Studio. They are displayed in the special "Links" folder in the solution explorer. You can also add links to services that also fall under their own special folder. I would like to create my own link type, complete with a special folder that other projects can use. What is this called, and where is there good documentation on how to do this?
