Install mysql2 gem on Mac os x Lion

The other day, I upgraded to Mac OSX Lion. This broke my rails since I had to re-execute mysql. While I have that re-creating the gem mysql2 has become problematic. I firmly launched the leopard, so I go from 32 to 64 bits.

~/code/rails/london (master)$ gem install mysql2 -- --with-mysql-dir=/usr/local/mysql Building native extensions. This could take a while... ERROR: Error installing mysql2: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. /Users/stewartmatheson/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.2-p0/bin/ruby extconf.rb --with-mysql-dir=/usr/local/mysql checking for rb_thread_blocking_region()... *** extconf.rb failed *** Could not create Makefile due to some reason, probably lack of necessary libraries and/or headers. So far, I have recompiled and installed MySQL and updated RVM. I also installed Xcode, but I had no luck.

Suggestions?

I don’t know if this will help, but try.

To make gim mysql2 work under my OSX Lion by running Ruby 1.8.7:

Install mysql - download mysql-5.5.14-osx10.6-x86_64

Create an alias inside .bash_profile for mysql e MySQLCOM

  • alias mysql="/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql"
  • alias mysqld="sudo /Library/StartupItems/MySQLCOM/MySQLCOM"

Install gem 'mysql2', '0.3.6'

Create this symbolic link:

 sudo ln -s /usr/local/mysql/lib/libmysqlclient.18.dylib /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.18.dylib

  • From the terminal $ locate mysql_config so you can find the path to it
  • Then $ sudo gem install mysql2 -- –with-mysql-config=/path/to/mysql_config

I installed this on a Ruby system (1.8.7 on Lion) as follows:

  • Install the 64-bit version of MySQL 5.5.19 from the 64-bit version of .dmg
  • Add / usr / local / mysql / lib to your DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH (I prefer this to solve a symbolic link, but they should be equivalent). I did this in my .bash_profile with:

     export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/local/mysql/lib:$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH"
  • Execute:

     env ARCHFLAGS="-arch x86_64" sudo gem install mysql2 -- --with-mysql-dir=/usr/local/mysql --with-mysql-lib=/usr/local/mysql/lib --with-mysql-include=/usr/local/mysql/include --with-mysql-config=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config

I solved this problem by reinstalling ruby - which seems to be required since the compilers are updated in Lion.
