Visual Studio 2010 no longer displays DataTips during debugging

Once I could hover over any variable during debugging and stopped at a breakpoint and could get these properties and variable values. I recently discovered that this functionality is called DataTip.

About a month ago, I lost this ability. Now when I hover over a variable, nothing happens. I never knew how much I liked this feature until I lost it.

Can someone tell me how can I turn DataTips back on?

I went through the Debug menu, but nothing jumps at me and does not shout "HERE. This is what you are looking for!" Interiors were also not fruitful.

As a side note, the only change that I remember when I lost DataTips was the first time I connected to our new TFS setup. I don’t see how this will affect DataTips, but something strange happened.

I get it! Turns out there was another change I made to VS recently, which was in charge.

Not so long ago, an employee sent me a link about Canvas debugging . I thought it looked pretty cool, so I did it. After some time, I decided that this was not for me, but left it sitting in case I discovered that I used it. Naturally, I completely forgot that I installed it in VS.

In short, I stumbled upon a forum post called Debugging Canvas broke my data hints . I think, β€œwhy not?”, I removed the Canvas debugger using Tools> Extension Manager and viola! My DataTips are back.

This is not quite a fix if you are actively using the Canvas debugger (until you fix the problem yourself), but it is definitely a fix for me.

After a long search, I discovered why I had a problem with data hints that did not appear. As far as I know, no one has mentioned this in all the blogs I’ve looked at yet. This is not VS SP1, Canvas Debugger, or any other software installation. Since I was about to start systematically uninstalling a bunch of things, I realized that my current mouse problems could contribute to this. I had a wireless mouse that worked. It will not scroll or activate in the window or does not allow me to click on the taskbar, among other things. So, I spent $ 20 bucks on the Microsoft wired mouse I bought, the cheapest one from them. Well, don’t you know that my hints have appeared. Keep in mind that I have already uninstalled / reinstalled my mouse driver.
