Sitecore Language File File Function - Does language version create?

Question

Can someone tell me what happens if I export a language file, rename all the language nodes to another language (for example, from en-US to en-GB) and then import it?

Are new language versions of the corresponding elements created? Or is content only imported if a language version exists?

Yes, new language versions are being created. However, the language element itself is not created (if it does not already exist). Therefore, if you then run Clenup Database, it will remove these versions of the elements.
