How to specify iPad Retina icon in Xcode 4.3 for iPhone app?

IPhone / Retina and iPad iPhone display the iPhone application icon. But on the iPad retina (simulator and device), I get an icon that apparently contains the application launch screen:

enter image description here

Given that my application is only for iPhone (not "Universal"), in Xcode 4.3 thereโ€™s no way to add the iPadโ€™s retina icon.

How can I correctly display the icon of my application on Retina iPad devices?

In Xcode, the destination final interface, where you add your icons and launch images, is just a graphical interface to the Info.plist file. When you make the iPhone just the target, the GUI for the iPad part is hidden. To add information to the Info.plist file, which is not covered by the graphical interface, go to the "Information" tab and enter it there. To add iPad Retina icons, add the Icon-72@2x.png and Icon-Small-50@2x.png icons to the icon file array in the "Information" section. Also add the actual 144 x 144 and 100 x 100 png representations of your icon with the appropriate name in the Xcode project and target.

I had this problem with the application, and when I went to edit the Info.plist file, I found that Default @ 2x.png was in the list of icons - I donโ€™t know how it happened, but this project went on for a while, so this may be the result Too many Xcode updates.

Removing it from plist entries also fixed the problem on the retina of the iPad. I'm still going to add additional iPad icons just in case, but if others have a problem, it's worth checking what Xcode has placed in these entries.
