When a task is not assigned to anyone, is not in the project and does not have a tag, you can still find it by searching by name in your workspace.
I do not work for Asana, but found that you can search by destination on "nobody", which helps me find lost tasks.
Advanced search and click "Unrelated Tasks" at the bottom of the drop-down list.
