Installing the perforce visual client on linux

I am on a Mac, trying my best to install perforce client visual (P4V) on my linux box. To do this, I download the correct version here and unzip the files.
Then I connected to the directory

~ / Desktop / P4V-2012-blah blah / bin

I also say

chmod + x p4 *

After that I try to start p4v (double click), but I can not see anything. The file type is displayed as a "text executable" , but I do not know why it does not work. On a Mac, I did the same thing - just clicked on p4v, and the client appeared (where I filled in the server address and all that) But I'm not sure what is happening here. Can someone give me directions?

FWIW I looked at this link and I see the desktop (so maybe GNOME is installed?). The p4v script should work.

I know that we don’t like links based on answers, but there is a pretty complete walk here: http://www.perforce.com/documentation/tenminute-test-drive-linuxunix

It should probably be on Super User, though.

You may have 64-bit Linux and you are trying to install x86 P4V or vice versa, so the command does not start. Check the correspondence between the types of OS and applications.
