Recommendations for installing and deploying a .NET4.5 application

We used the Visual Studio installation project along with Git, TeamCity, and NetSparcle to create a simple deployment process along with convenient auto-update features for our customers.

Since we are moving to .net4.5, we can no longer use the VS installation project (no longer support it) and switch to another installer. So here is my question for you:

  • Do you have any recommendations which installer works fine for .net4.5 in VS2012? If you recommend InstallShield, which should i
  • Which one works well with TeamCity or which server / deployment system do you recommend?
  • Any good or bad experience with specific installers?

I am reading this one , but .net4.5 seems to be a game changer here.

PS: Flexira software is quite expensive ...

Advanced Installer recently added support for the .NET Framework 4.5 . You can try it and see if it does what you need. It has both a free version and licensed editions.

The following is a list of other tools for creating settings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_installation_software

You can try to test the ones you like if they fit your needs.

As a side note, the .NET Framework 4.5 is not very different from a game changer. The application deployment process has not changed much. Therefore, even if the installation tool does not support full support for .NET 4.5, it can still satisfy your needs.

The ability to download and install the free version of InstallShield Limited Edition is included with Visual Studio. This is basically the same as the VS Setup Project was able to do this, if you were happy with it, you should be happy with it and in a better position from the installation perspective and the perspective of the upgrade path.

If you decide to upgrade, usually Professional is enough. There is also Windows Installer XML, and in the past I wrote blogs about strategies for creating a limited-edition project to “increase the installation package” using WiX federation modules. This allows InstallShield LE to expand its workload in various ways.
