Android - memory leak when using BitmapRegionDecoder

I am trying to write a small widget to display images from an SDCARD with a pan / zoom function. After most of the images do not fit into the memory as fully sampled bitmaps, I try to do something more complicated - I will have a sampled bitmap of the whole image for quick pan and zoom, and hi-res will crop part of the image only which is visible on the viewing screen, which will be calculated in the background and drawn at a low resolution when this is done (separate stream).

After highlighting the search, I finally found a wonderful BitmapRegionDecoder that can download part of the image for me, with no memory exceptions in the process.

WOO-HOO, right?

Only ... When switching between many images - I found that BitmapRegionDecoder really does not free the memory that it uses after the call to recycle () ... the heap just grows and grows until I get the frustration of -of-memory ...

Here is a short loop that demonstrates the problem:

SOME_LARGE_IMAGE_PATH is a 3000x3000 PNG file (not so far from the images captured by the camera).

Ran on emulator with API-10.

If I understand the documentation correctly, you can reuse BitmapRegionDecoder without having to reinstall it every time you use it. Did you try to just reuse it?

And I have to agree: everyone writes that BitmapRegionDecoder should be used for this scenario (display large raster images without using in OOM), but no one knows exactly how to use it correctly :(
