Any downside to using a GUID as the name of uploaded images

Is there a drawback in using the GUID as the file name for the uploaded image to avoid duplication?

Your names will be unique, true. But they will not be sorted in any order.

You can use the Unix TimeStamp in front of your GUID to help sort by name and perform other such operations, without having to use a lookup table in your database.

If you save downloaded files with a name based on the hash (e.g. SHA1) of the file contents, you can also store files with the same contents only once (saving space).

I think it is quite unique, but think about using your own generator using the date and time and some serial number, I think the names will be more expressive.

There is a drawback to using a GUID in a file name. CLSID is a GUID, and some antivirus scanners will think that you are trying to use this exploit and mark your files as potential malware.

For more information, see Windows Hidden Extension Extension for Windows CLSID Vulnerability .
