Vim powerline + tmux does not expand to fill the entire status bar

Question

I have vim and tmux. I am trying to make vim-powerline look like the first photo. I can achieve this if I have one instance of vim and then: vsplit to achieve the following effect.

On the other hand, if I were to use vertical splits using tmux, vim-powerline would look like this:

I tried to delete the segments, but vim-powerline still truncates prematurely and moves on to the next line.

I am using Mac OSX Lion on iTerm2. vim comes from brew.

Any help would be appreciated!

I tried reinstalling the tmux / vim power line and checking $ COLUMNS and: install the columns, but they just didn't look working. Try

export LANG=en_US.UTF-8 

For me it worked like a charm.
