SQL Server backup error - not part of a set of multiple family files

I am trying to back up a SQL Server 2008 R2 database. However, I get the following error, no matter where I try to save the backup.

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The volume on the device 'D: \ Programfiles \ Microsoft SQL Server \ MSSQL.1 \ MSSQL \ Backup \ dbName.bak' is not part of many multimedia sets. BACKUP WITH FORMAT can be used to create a new media set. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo).

Can anyone shed some light on this?

The only useful links that I could make Google were the following, but little used:

I could not reproduce the problem, however, a workaround for those who may encounter this: use the WITH FORMAT clause or the "Options" - back up the new media set and delete all existing backup set options in the GUI.
