HTML / Javascript substitution for side gadgets?

I am a web developer and have a Windows Sidebar gadget written in HTML / Javascript. It is very popular (500,000+ downloads), and users are requesting solutions for Windows 8, since gadget support has been removed. Microsoft will also remove the sidebar in Windows 7.

What platform / SDK options are there to replace the sidebar gadget?

I get all kinds of results from Google, but none of them seem like an obvious choice. Adobe Air seems like a whole new technology that requires a lot of training. Simplicity is the key, and this is the main reason why I am so attached to the sidebar gadgets.

These are the following requirements:

  • Running on windows
  • HTML, Javascript, AJAX
  • Support without window decoration (without title button, minimize or close)
  • Minimum Platforms / SDK Wrappers
  • Ability to read / write xml data to disk

The bonus will be if:

  • It also works on Linux and Mac.
  • SDK / platform dependencies may be included in the application package

The Super-duper bonus will be if:

  • The SDK is supported on handheld devices such as iOS and Android.

Take a look at XUL . Meet everything you check:

  • Running on windows
  • HTML, Javascript, AJAX
  • Support without window decoration (without title button, minimize or close)
  • Minimum Platforms / SDK Wrappers
  • Ability to read / write xml data to disk
  • It also works on Linux and Mac.

Here you can find what it is. Hope this helps a buddy.

For those who stumble upon this thread and are looking for a way to create applications for working with HTML / javascript. I'm just going to list AppJS as another potential SDK. The embed frame with your scripts is 50 MB.

TideSDK seems to be another multi-platform option similar to AppJS.
