What do these red arrows mean in Wim?

When I edit the .pt files (which I configured to highlight in XML) in MacVim, I get these funny little red arrows on the side.

What does it mean? What is the “feature” in this and where can I find out more information about this?

These arrows are most likely added by the Syntastic plugin; you can probably remove this plugin due to execution inside Janus.

Also, as mentioned in my comments. You should not use Vim distributions, and here's why:

It is considered bad practice, which is one of the main reasons. At least from an experienced / advanced / expert user Vim, I do not pretend to be one of them, but I'm certainly not a newbie. :)

But the most important reason is that it slows you down. In no more than one way. This slows you down because you do not recognize Vim because you did not configure it, the distribution, of course, you can usually redefine your settings, but it is definitely not the same as if you did it yourself.

And perhaps more importantly, because you need to know everything that plugins do at the same time. This is not good. This, of course, changes if you are comfortable with all the plugins before starting work.

For example, right now you did not add these arrows, it was done in the distribution. And so you were confused because you did not know about it, but he is still there.

These are just my two cents from an adherent point of view (if I qualify it). Vim user.

I don’t want to steal thunder from Eduan, but removing the syntax as a whole is probably a bit extinct, as this can be a pretty useful plugin.

Instead, you should read the syntax documentation :h syntastic and take a look around the option that deals with “signs”.

Advice to drop Janus, on the other hand ... I fully support him.

It looks like you have a syntax error in the "xmlns: tal" section of your heading (something looks like a funky look at this colon compared to others in your image), although it may also be that Syntastic is complaining about the misunderstanding of the suffix. pt (I don't think this is a problem). From getting the help of Syntastic ( :h syntastic ), you can find the command :Errors , which will try to give you a hint about the cause of the error. For example, I stupidly inserted a new element into the list of attributes with several lines, and googling brought me here.

Of course, removing Syntastic, Janus, or vim will also remove the error indicator, as others have suggested.
