What is the maven base directory?

I'm struggling to find documentation on the maven site that explicitly tells me what a "base directory" is. This term refers to several pages, as if I should know what this means.

I imagine a directory containing pom.xml (which pom if one pom refers to another?), But can it be thinner than that?

Found it in Introduction to POM :

project.basedir: the directory where the current project is located.

This is the directory where pom.xml is stored (in the root of the project).
