Http and https can technically be two different sites. You can configure the server on a server with completely different content. They have two different URLs (the difference is that s).
Thus, almost all webmasters with both http and https serve almost identical content, regardless of whether the site is secure or not. Google recognizes this and allows you to run both at the same time, without fear of duplication of content.
If you go from one to another, you should treat it like other URL changes.
- Put 301 redirects in place so that each page is correctly redirected to the same content on its new URL
- Register both versions with Google Webmaster Tools
I personally did not make this switch, but it should be executed without problems. In the last couple of years, I have changed other types of links to the site.
Another alternative would be to simultaneously launch both http and https and switch users more gradually. For example, when logging in.
