Sometimes git tells me that EVERY file is new and unsteady?

I made changes to the file, go to the GitHub interface for Windows. Commit my changes, then click the sync button. Then it talks about the error, try using the shell instead. So I go to the shell and type git status . He tells me that every file in the repo is new and uninstalled. There, like 4000 uninstalled files.

This happened to me 3 times now, on two different computers, on different repositories, and even when working alone. Is this a common mistake? Sometimes I get a separate head from nowhere, or the .lock file hangs for too long. What's happening. I need so long to recover from the mess every day.

This is usually a problem for Windows users who share repositories with Unix users and have not properly configured their Git or editing settings at the end of the line. See the man page for the following settings:

  • core.autocrlf
  • core.eol
  • core.whitespace

See Working with line endings for more information.
