How to embed PDF in a web page using Acrobat Reader instead of Acrobat

I have a PDF form that uses Acrobat 8 features. The form contains Javascript that interacts with the hosting web page.

Some of my Windows users have both Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader, and Adobe Acrobat should be the default handler for PDF files. Users with Adobe Acrobat 7 cannot use the form, even if they can have Acrobat Reader 8 or 9 installed.

Currently, PDF is embedded as follows:

<object id="host" data="/path/to/document.pdf" type="application/pdf" width="900" height="550" ></object>

PDF is loaded in the client’s browser and you cannot control it from your web page.

You will need a client to make sure their PDF is linked by default to a later version of the reader. Two possible things:

  • In acrobat reader 8/9, go to the Help section and select restore this installation. It can then correctly register this version, since the PDF program starts by default for PDF content
  • In the browser, open "Tools-> Options" and select "Install Programs" to associate PDF types with Acrobat Reader 8/9.
