How to create a remote link or form that executes ajax synchronous request

I am familiar with the remote: true option, which you can provide to forms and links. However, an AJAX request created using these forms and links is always asynchronous.

I know that you can do synchronous AJAX requests with jQuery, and I am wondering how this can be achieved with remote: true .

I think this is possible as it was possible before using link_to_remote http://apidock.com/rails/ActionView/Helpers/PrototypeHelper/link_to_remote . But I can not find any documentation on it.
