How Java applications can use tray icons in Ubuntu> = 13.04 (with AppInicator)

The system tray was deprecated in Ubuntu 11.04 in favor of the new AppIndicator. Since then, SWT applications have not been able to display the icon unless the user has used a workaround that is included for backward compatibility. Version 13.04 now removes this workaround, that is, SWT applications (which do not support appindicator) can no longer create tray icons.

How are you guys going to create tray icon apps using Java? Preferably in a way that works on both Windows and Linux, and not necessarily with SWT. Thanks!

Well, who knew. This exists in awt, so it supports: SystemTray , and it works with the AppIndicator in Ubuntu 13.04.

However, there is a bug that makes the icon a transparent background amateurish gray :(
