EMR vs EC2 / Hadoop on AWS

I know that EC2 is more flexible, but works more on EMR. However, from a cost point of view, when using EC2, EC2 volumes are likely to require EBS volumes, while AWS simply transfers data from S3. Thus, the number crunch in the AWS calculator, although for EMR you also have to pay for EC2, will EMR become cheaper than EC2 ?? Am I wrong here? Sure, EC2 with EBS is probably faster, but is it worth it?

thanks Matt
