Smooth cone normals

I am trying to calculate smooth normals for a cone. Looking around code examples and explanations, I constantly come across directions for the normal face. I posted a couple of photos below what I'm doing. The first - which basically just normalizes the position of the vertex - gives me decently smooth shading, but the edges are "missing" and the bottom is not solid. The second has edges, but the shading is flat (normal to the face), and my light does not reflect from them correctly.

The cone is built from GL_TRIANGLES.
